Teens & Tots was born from a very real struggle
— a mom trying to care for her child’s natural hair and not finding a place
that truly understood it.
Like many parents, the founder experienced the stress of salon visits that ended in tears. Hair pulled too tight, sensitive scalps ignored, heat used unnecessarily, and children made to sit through discomfort because “that’s just how it’s done.” What should have been a moment of care became something children feared.
Long before becoming a mother, the founder had spent years working with hair starting as a young hairstylist during her school and university years, and later balancing this passion alongside a professional career in the corporate oil industry. When she became a working mom, she realised that even with knowledge, experience, and resources, finding a gentle, child-centred salon for Afro hair was still a challenge many mothers faced.
That realisation changed everything.
She envisioned a space where children could feel safe, heard, and respected where natural Afro hair and soft coils were treated gently, without force or pain, and where parents didn’t have to apologise if their child needed a break.
The name Teens & Tots came from this belief: hair care is a lifetime journey, and it’s best to start early. From toddler coils to teenage coils, the goal was to create one trusted space that grows with children, teaching healthy hair habits from the very beginning.
That vision became Teens & Tots — a child-centred natural hair salon built around patience, education, and love.
As the community grew, moms began asking for the same experience for themselves — a calm space to care for their hair without rushing, harsh chemicals, or pressure.
And so Indlovukazi, meaning “The Queen”, was created — a peaceful space next door designed for women.
Today, Teens & Tots & Indlovukazi supports the full hair journey — from toddler coils to queenly crowns.
More than a salon, it is a community built on real experiences, gentle care, and confidence rooted in culture.
